Then I went to the capital of Finland, Helsinki and found the oldest buildings were not much older then in the small town in Nova Scotia I grew up in. So I decided I should find out the history of this relative new city of Helsinki

History of Helsinki

Early history of Helsinki 1550-1800

Helsinki was founded in 1550 which makes it 200 years older then Halifax the oldest city in Nova Scotia Canada. The town of Helsinki was founded by King Gustavus Vasa of Sweden and was located on the River Vantaa. It was built as a trading post as a competitor to Tallinn in Estonia; but ended up being an important military base for Sweden instead.

In 1640 the city was moved to Vironniemi headland close to the location of today’s city center. In 1742 Russia occupied Helsinki of 1713-21 and again in 1742. In 1748 Sweden built a sea-fortress of Suomenlinna to protect the city from being attacked (Gibraltar of the North). After the fortress was built Helsinki became a prosperous city.

Helsinki 1800 -1916

In 1808 the sea-fortress of Suomenlinna fell to the Russians without a fight and Helsinki was occupied by the Russians. In 1808 the city was almost completely destroyed by a great fire which explains to me why Helsinki doesn’t look much older then Cities in eastern Canada. After the fire the Helsinki was rebuilt as “well-planned, spacious metropolis” and built like a capital city by Johan Albrecht Ehrenström and German-born architect Carl Ludwig Engel.

In 1809 Finland was annexed to Russia as an Autonomous Grand Duchy. The capital of Finland was changed to Helsinki 1812. The University was moved to Helsinki in 1828.

After the fire the Helsinki was rebuilt as “well-planned, spacious metropolis” and built like a capital city by Johan Albrecht Ehrenström and German-born architect Carl Ludwig Engel. After the capital was moved to Helsinki the city began to grow rapidly.
As Helsinki began to grow railways were built from Helsinki to Hämeenlinna(1862) and from Helsinki to St Petersburg (1870).The second half of the 18th century neo-renaissance buildings were built.

Helsinki 1917-2004

Finland declared its independence in 1917. Civil war breaks out and the government flees Helsinki in January 1918. In 1919 the government wins and government returns to Helsinki.

Helsinki Olympic Stadium was completed in 1938 but because of war the Olympic Games were not held in Helsinki until 1952.

In WW2 Helsinki was attacked from the air but suffered relatively little damage and was not occupied by foreign forces during the war.
In 1975, Helsinki hosted the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE).

The first U.S.-Soviet summit took place in Helsinki in 1990, when President George Bush met President Mikhail Gorbachev. In the year 2000 Helsinki was 450 years old. Helsinki is now considered the cultural center of Finland.

Below the facts there are photos of building of Helsinki, These are what truly define the city of Helsinki today. The first thing I noticed when I arrived here that there are no office towers or any tall building in Helsinki which in North America defines most of the large cities.

Population growth of Helsenki

1810: 4,070 inhabitants
1830: 11,100
1850: 20,700
1880: 43,300
1900: 93,600
1925: 209,800
2001: 559,718

Brief facts about Helsinki

Information from http://www.hel.fi/english/info/facts.html

Total area 686 sq.km
Sea 500 sq.km
Land 186 sq.km
Shoreline (mainland) 98 km
Islands 315

Mean temperature (whole year 2004) 6.2°C
Warmest month August, mean temperature 17.3°C
Coldest month January, mean temperature -5.7°C

Total population (2004/2005) 559,046
Men 46,6 %
Women 53,4 %
Finnish-speaking 86,7 %
Swedish-speaking 6,2 %
Population density 2,993 inhabitants per sq.km
Total population in the Helsinki Region (2004/2005) 1,240,48

Bibliography

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helsinki

World Facts http://worldfacts.us/Finland-Helsinki.htm

City of Helsinki http://www.hel.fi/english/

Virtual.Finland http://virtual.finland.fi/

Some Photos from Muuka.Com http://www.muuka.com/

A large complex with several floors with underground tram connections, surrounding shopping areas, and connecting buses truly makes it a central area for commuting. On the outside, The renowned architectural masterpiece, Rautatieasema, dating as far back as 1914 represents late Finnish Art Nouveau, the main work of famous architect Eliel Saarinen.
The rail system is quite organized and on time, with the central area containing time tables which I find are comprehensive. Perhaps the only drawback is the night life where trains after 1:47 in the morning cease and continue again around 6:00 am.

Stockmann's Department Store

Personally, Stockmann is Helsinki's best department store, selling everything from A to Y except for exotic animals you’ll find in the Zoo. It sells whatever required and by far is Helsinki's largest and oldest department store. There is even a whole floor dedicated for men’s clothing which I could spend my entire day browsing through the merchandise.

Temppeliaukio Church

Built around the late 1960’s, it was designed by the architect brothers, Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen. The appearance is built from solid rock and some people call it the Church of the Rock. I found it more interesting that the natural light brightens the inside through the many fitted glasses between the dome and the wall. The dome shape is rather beautiful, and it is said that the church is often used for concerts, because of the excellent acoustics.

Finnish Parliament

Parliament House built around 1920 is built near the water and the when seen from afar it appears like a grey cube. However further inspection reveals a reddish rock granite supported by surrounding columns. The building contains several floors, and although we didn’t have a chance to look at the interior, I find that this building is very important in terms of political history.

Senate Square
By far this is my favorite open space site, show casing Carl Ludvig Engel's unique architecture, situated on the opposite side of Helsinki University. The figure in the center of the large area surrounded by cobbled stones provides a sense of freedom, and the wide stairway to leading up to Helsinki Cathedral is a remarkable construction.

Sederholmin Talo

Among the attractions the Sederholmin Talo is among surprisingly the oldest in Helsinki dating as far back as the 1800’s. Nevertheless I think the museum is a great place to examine Johan Sederholm, who was the riches man in Helsinki for his time.

Design Museo

Modern architecture design and functionality is a specialty I find unique in any new idea or concept. Located on Keavuorenkatu 23 street in Helsinki, it is a bit difficult to find for it does not resemble any church, but rather it is housed in a large commercial building. Nevertheless this museum represents the ideas and thoughts that go into any piece of furniture, housing fixture, or anything usable in a day to day basis.

For instance, there were unique lighting fixtures designed to be lightweight and flexible, resembling a bow and anchored between the roof and floor. With this setup, a light fixture of this type can be placed in any room regardless of height limitations.
Another functional and beautiful design comes from a wooden table with the surface containing a photograph, with foldable legs it doubles as a wall picture. Indeed I would have loved a picture of beautiful Helsinki by the water at night to serve as a photograph and dinner table.
Among other unique artifacts, the well known Nokia phones were showed cased indicating design drawings, a line of bike cycles suspended by wire, well designed chairs that were also beautiful, and last but not least a floor mat that glows in the dark with a certain pulsing sensation.

Perhaps more intriguing were the washroom tiles with hidden messages that only someone taught in the ways of reading “dot – code” could feel and understand. I can only imagine what the blind man was smiling about while taking a shower.

National Museum

This museum easily consumed the entire time of my day with unending artifacts to see, and providing a unique historical approach to a greater understanding of Finland.

Situated just past the Parliament building, at first glance it resembled more of a church, but internally it is very large and highly organized self tour starting at the basement area.

Starting from the basement, the collections include medals and coins, leading to an armory showcasing the armory room. Further, the upper levels were a little intimidating, showing historical life in a religious perspective, the difficult times during the war as a buffer zone between Russia and Sweden. Each room has displays on various themes which I find interesting include clothing, entertainment, the office, the home, toys/games, technology and much more relating to that year. More importantly I find it enjoyable to see how things have changed leading up to the modern society leading up to fifteen minute video, showing footage of various events in Finland’s history with appropriate time stamps to refer to specific war time, the Olympic Games, and more.

However the tour doesn’t stop there, there is also a separate room showcasing outdoor life in the wilderness, complete with human and animal skeletons. After leaving the museum, it provided me a sense of greater understanding how Finland came to be, especially from a political and wartime perspective. More importantly, there were series of rooms showcasing the life of history’s political leaders and their way of life.

Times have really changed, and even now I can see the museum continue to grow as we write history in the modern world, particularly when you can find a Nokia phone in a class case.

Finland Adventures

By Greg Keith

Finland Adventures

With only slightly more then two weeks left in Finland; its time to reflect on my time here and what I have learned this document will deal with Finland and what I have learned about Finland. The first thing I find the people in Finland are never in a rush to get things done everything is done at a slow pace something like the pace of small towns in Nova Scotia Canada where I grew up and not like Calgary at all. I have taken advantage of this and have explored Espoo and Helsinki on foot. I have spent a lot of time lost and trying to find my way back to Leppavaarä. These are some of my adventures.
Finland Adventures

The first few weeks here I spent a lot of time exploring Helsinki. The first few days were spent admiring the buildings of Helsinki from the 1800 century. The narrow streets and style of the buildings make it a lot different then in Calgary AB. I was also impressed by the styles of the Churches in downtown Helsinki. The Church which was Build into the hill (Temppeliaukion kirkko) was very impressive on the inside. All the other churches I Just seen from the outside including the Two Steeple Church (Johanneksenkirkko)and The Lutheran Cathedral. There are other beautiful Churchs in downtown Helsinki but are unsure of there names the one along the harbor was also very nice looking and very old.

The Harbor of Helsinki is particularly interesting with the large amount of boat traffic along the Harbor you can see little fishing boats ice breakers, sail boats, cruise ships and ferries. Living in Calgary Alberta where the ocean is thousands of KM away it felt nice to be near the ocean again with the smells and the sounds that come with it.

The other important thing about Helsinki is the way it is designed it has no tall buildings and it has the feel of a small town not a big city; everybody moves at their own speed. The people of Helsinki are very friendly and helpful which is very useful when you are lost.

What did I do I Helsinki The first week I was in Helsinki I walked in to this out door museum which had pictures from all over the world, I spent a few Hours looking at all the works of art, Trying to find a picture from Canada I finally did find a picture of the Canadian artic.

I went to quite a few bars in Helsinki with members of my classes and other friends I meant along the way. I found the bar life similar to what you find in Canada except they don’t have ’bar maids’ going around trying to sell you drinks. If you want something to drink in Helsinki you go to the bar and ask for it. It took a little time to get use to that.

Although I haven’t bought very much In Finland Helsinki has a very good shopping district. The store Stockman’s has every conceivable type of men’s clothing I have ever seen in one place. The store says it has everything you could possibility need if they don’t sell it you don’t need it. Even the prices on the stuff I look at were reasonable.

The last way I explored Helsinki was the Walk from Leppavaarä to Helsinki . Most people think I was crazy it took over 3 hours. It was close to when I first arrived. I learned a lot from the hike. Examples like what type of trees grow here, the type of ground Helsinki built on., the of types of building people live in Helsinki. Helsinki has very good walking biking and hiking trails and you don’t have to share you space with cars.

The other place I explored was around where I live in Leppavaarä. I was interested in the park in back of the apartments it looks like it was at one time, some type of army base with trenches and other military looking things I was wondering when it was used. It to to me looks like it was build near the second world war but there is no signs or anything to explain what or went it was built so it remains a little mystery to me.

The other thing I did when I was in Helsinki was visit two museums

National museum

When we arrived inside we headed to the lower floor started by looking at pottery a whole room dictated to one company hundreds of different items from late 19th and 20th century.

We headed to the next section which contained hundreds of coins from the past , including a fur which was used for cash hundred of years ago, I must have spent an hour looking at the different type of coins I could have spent the whole day just looking at old coins and metals.

The next room I entered contained weapons from the past including lots of swards knight clothing, guns ect. There was a knight uniform used for burials. I spent a short time in this area trying to catch up with everybody else. That I was with another room which I could have spent all day exploring the different swards, knives and guns

As we keep going we seen pictures, clothing and furniture which showed what life from 17th to the 20th past looked like (At least for the rich there was little of what the poor lived like). It even had an old house which actually has the smell of the time period. We couldn’t go in at the time. I tried to get the smell by putting my head in the door. It smelt like homes which I been in N.B. Canada which heated their houses with wood.

After two or three hours of exploring the museum we found a place to sit down and we watched a movie about the events of the 20th century; which showed actual video from that time period.

After spending over half a day there we decided to go, with seeing only about half the exhibits. To see the museum completely you could spend days looking at everything.

Design Museum

Korkeavuorenkatu 23
FI-00130 Helsinki

We wanted to see looked at the history of innovations in Finland we spent about a half a day there. It was in early October. The highlights were

Tracing the developments of Nokia from a pulp and paper company to one of the largest cell phone companies.

The exhibit on how the equipment for crushing rock developed over the last 100 years.

The development of the ski pole.

The story I that was told on the audio equipment where you were supped to help you creatively think.

The bicycle exhibit was interesting.

This will be also used as part of my report about Finland for future student to reference at Mount Royal.

People of Finland

When me and Ronald first arrived student from the school came to pick us up. It took us a half hour to find them. I think they were expecting two young Canadians not a Chinese Canadian and a middle age Canadian traveling together. Once we hooked up with them they were very helpful they not only brought us to be apartments but showed us around Helsinki. It was about midnight when we arrived so by the time they show us Helsinki every thing was closed but it was nice to see what the city looked like.

Last Train

One time we went to a bar and stayed to long and missed the last train home. A person seen that we didn’t know how to get home took a taxi with us to her place which was on the way and then paid for that part of the trip. She directed the taxi how to drop us off at the right place. She then proceeded to call us and make sure we where ok. How is that for helping people!

Lost
The people of Finland were always helpful; every time I was lost the first person I ask would help me out even if they didn’t speak English. Example - onetime I didn’t know which busses to take to get back home a person who spoke very little English showed me the way by pointing out the correct busses on the bus route map and pointing out where I should change busses.

Shopping

When going shopping most stores had at least one person who spoke English. The outdoor market most people spoke very little to no English so it was important to know basic Finish to communicate. Most people in stores tried to help you to the best of their abilities. In some cases in the grocery store, I had to point to what I wanted and write down the weight of the amount I wanted. When I bought my tickets to Lapland, everything was done by me writing down the time the date and the location I was going to.

Students and Teachers

The student and staff at Evtek were always helpful telling us about events going on and giving directions how to get to locations we wanted to visit. Most teachers were very helpful with us. Most teachers are always trying to do everything possible to help student pass and do well in the courses.

Most teachers were quick to respond to e-mail and other questions which I asked in person. One teacher Peeter Kitsnik was very helpful with his courses. I would recommend taking courses from him and not leave the studying till the last minute for his exam.

I would also recommend to students to take Local Area Networks and Internetworks from Erik Pätynen he was always fast to fix any problem with the Cisco part of the course and was always prompt with his e-mail request. His courses takes up a lot of time compared to the other courses.

The other course which should be taken is finish for exchange students which involved learning the culture and language of Finland. Marjo-Riitta Näyhö the teacher brought in food and drinks of Finland for the class to taste.

Lapland

Train Ride

It was 1 pm when a got on the train to Lapland. The first two hours of the trip were quit and not a lot happened. Then this drunk Fin sat in front of me and he just wanted to talk I keep telling him I don’t speak finish but he keep talking so a just nodded my head. The woman beside me told me some of what he was saying and he was telling me war stories. I began to understand what he was talking about by his hand gesturers and other non verbal communication this conversation lasted over 2 hours. I think the other people in the car were happy I was talking to him because he was bothering everyone in the car until I allowed him to talk to me.

The next person I talked to was a 13 year old kid who was heading to visit his father and he just wanted to talk about Playstation games and laugh at me for still playing Video games at my age we talked for about an hour.

Arrival

When I arrived in Rovanienmi the Capital of Lapland it was almost Midnight. At least I was dressed for the weather it was snowing and not to cold. I walked to the Shell gas station near the train station and asked directions to the Santa Claus hotel. He gave me a map and showed me the way to the hotel he was very helpful. I was glad it was less then KM away. I ended up staying at the Rudolph hostel which was half KM from the Santa Claus hotel but was owned by them.

What I Did

The next Day I walk up to the artic Circle and visited Santa Claus. I guess you need kids to make it exciting.

On Christmas Eve I want cross country skiing I enjoyed this they closed at 3PM I was the last one back so the workers drove me back into the town which was very kind of them. The told me some adventure stories on the way into the city. They also offered to give me a discount on snowshoeing if I wanted to learn.

On Christmas day I went downhill skiing I talked to a few people going up the lift with them. I found this ski hill a little boring after skiing in the Canadian Rockies two different short ski runs weren’t worth the effort.

The next Day I explored the town then went to the movie theater watched a movie I had an uneventful ride back to Calgary on the night train.

When talking to people in Lapland I found that they were more comfortable speaking in English the people in Helsinki and even the older population understood English.

Conclusion

The people of Finland are very friendly people and I would have no problems going back there to visit again. I find the people are more open to you if you try to speak some of their language. The most helpful words I will list below

Usefull Finnish words

The most important word is Kiitos which means thank you which I used every time a bought something or asked a question in English it shows that you’re at least trying to learn and respect the language.

Other words that is very useful
Moi - hi
Hei - hello(formal)
Moi Moi –good by
Hei Hei –good by
Ei – no
Joo –yes
Anteeksi – Sorry, parden
Ole havä - you are welcome

Puhutko englantia – do you speak English

Minä olen – I am
Sina olet – you are

Kuka – who

Mikä – what

Missa – where
To know your numbers is very important when shopping in the mall and especially in the outdoor market. The basic numbers are

0 - nolla, 1- yksi ,2 - kaksi, 3 - kolme 4 - neljä , 5 - viisi, 6 - kuusi, 7- seitsemän, 8-kahdeksan, 9-yhdeksän, 10- kymmenen

If you know the above information you can communicate at least enough to shop in stores and find out basic information.

I would also note not to use the phrase “Ah” at the end of English statements. It sound in finish like you are saying no or a negative statement (ei, et, en) all the time.

Welcome

Welcome to Finspiration. My name is Ronald Lau, one of the two fortunate students along with my friend Greg Keith from Canada, Mount Royal College Computer Science Faculty to travel to Finland, EVTEK University of Applied Sciences for the period of August 28, 2004 to December 21, 2005. Traveling to Finland as an international exchange student has in many ways enriched our lives to a whole new dimension. Dimensions enriched include a greater understanding for various cultures, ability to overcome obstacles, and most importantly to travel, to conquer, and return in one piece. In essence, it was a journey that provided so many new experiences that has helped us understand the world through a global perspective. However, traveling to another country is no easy task. It involves a lot of paperwork and preparation. But don't take my word; every person will encounter a different experience, some things here are common sense, and rather is a guide should you choose to tread in my footsteps across the waters to another country. However, if you do so choose to pursue this opportunity, I'll be your tour guide. So take a stroll with me, don't fall behind, and you should be fine.

Cheers! Ronald & Greg

You’ll need to provide information on your length of stay, two passport photos, and an official letter from the bank stating sufficient funds (each month’s stay equivalent to about $1000). In our experience, if you intend to stay there for a semester (about 4 months), it maybe a better idea to request a visa for two semesters (8 months) just in case of unexpected events such as a opportunity for a work term. On the other hand, getting an extended visa during your stay in Finland is also possible.

¨ Student Guard Health Insurance

http://www.studentguard.com
Accidents do happen, and although we never had to use it, having it provides a sense of security overseas. Likewise, there are also two banks side by side with Sello designated red. Although HOAS prefers to work with Sampo bank, there are some problems to address, and it deals with timing issues. In general, take the amount of time they declare and multiply by five: In my case, a check deposit from Canada to Sampo bank which they stated would take only five working days in fact took nearly a month. Remember to leave room for souvenirs on the way back.

¨ Sensitive electronic equipment should be turned off during flight and kept with you as a carry on since the airport is not responsible for damages to luggage. But based on our four month experience, two pieces of luggage for the plane cargo and a light backpack as a carry on is the standard air flight capacity rules. Bear in mind sensitive documents and equipment can be stolen, lost, and damaged, therefore it is best to carry them with you on a light backpack. Here’s a list of what we carried and is only a recommendation:

Luggage 1

Skates

Dress Shoes for work term

Luggage 2

Clothing (Winter jacket, boots, gloves, face mask, toque, swimming suit)

Dress clothes for work term

Extra water proof bags

Carry On Light Backpack

Three forms of payments (credit, debit, check, etc.)

Documentation (Flight booking, passport/visa, receipt holder, driver’s license, etc.)

Hygiene/Health Kit

Universal Power Adaptor

Mobile Laptop w/ power adapter

Information Storage Suggestion: USB device with Roboform Encryption Software

Camera Suggestion: Cannon Powershot SD300 w/ 1 GB capacity card w/ power adapter

Phone Suggestion: Unlocked certified Finnish phone w/ power adapter.

Upon Departure

¨ Calgary Airport

The long journey by car towards the airport, or so it seemed long, with the realization that indeed we are leaving Canada, and as I hauled the luggage on to the trolleys, it seemed heavier than I expected. Lack of sleep, last minute checks, dilating pupils, what could we have possibly missed? Interestingly, checking your luggage is simplified using a touch screen teller machine. But as we have found out, it is not as friendly as we had hope for, and ultimately we ended up doing it manually. In addition, with our handy little digital camera, we took photos of each individual piece of luggage which actually proved useful on our arrival to Finland. It was a good thing we arrived at the airport two hours in advanced, because as Murphy’s Law states: “What possibly can go wrong might go wrong”, and it was then we did some last minute things such as obtaining 215 EUR from 300 CAD at a currency converter. http://www.xe.com/ucc/

¨ London Heathrow

Eight hours later, we touched down on London Heathrow. The September 11th incident did cause such a stir, where security officers walked among the shopping crowd carry submachine guns. However despite this threat, the idea of tax free shopping within an airport was more than enough to still inspire people to buy. The long thread mills provided a quick means of getting around in this large airport, laughing along the way as Greg was trying to catch up by foot alongside.

Upon Arrival

The view from above the night sky shows a massive network of roads and pave ways that resemble more like rivers and streams opposed to the square grid we find in Calgary. This fact is particularly interesting since every each road has a specific name, in contrast to the numbered streets and avenues. In preparation of our arrival to Finland airport, and after going through customs, we received a stamp on our passports. Yeah! The official badge to confirm you’ve arrived. There was one mishap, a piece of my luggage was not found. The digital camera provided a quick description and within two days with Tiina’s help from the EVTEK international office, they promptly shipped it to my apartment. Yohanne and Maryella, the two students from EVTEK were kind enough to provide transportation and keys to our apartment, in addition to a quick drive around in Helsinki city.

This in essence brought out the extrovert within. However many of these experiences are not documented here, but rather in http://www.finspiration.com, which includes actual destinations and photographs that cannot fit in this essay. In short, this section is a brief overview of the new found leanings.

New Found Friends

In many aspects, the realization of staying in Finland was an extension of Calgary, minus the friendly faces I knew, to be expanded to the strangers I would soon call my friends. As time progressed, it wasn’t so much that unfamiliarity of the environment was the struggle, but understanding thy self that became the challenge. The interactions with people, particularly with room mates who were from Switzerland and France really allowed me to think beyond the boundaries of myself, the small discussions over supper, the events we attended outside EVTEK, helped me understand who I was and how I could apply socially acceptable behaviors to quickly change a relationship from stranger to friend. An overall understanding of global affairs can also work in your favor, as we have found that people in Finland are in tune with Miikka Kiprusoff, the Finnish goal tender for the Calgary Flames hockey team.

Language and Cultural Diversity

To understand the language and cultural diversity, tolerance, and acceptance stemmed from the self confidence of having to apply problem solving, critical thinking, and most importantly networking in many situations. Many of the events and places we discovered were in fact through word of mouth, a contact, a friend; knowing when to toggle between an extrovert and an introvert became a key ingredient, an element from within rediscovered when everything in Calgary is familiar.

Just bear in mind, quick thinking and problem solving will come in handy, particularly when attending a public Sauna where the major cultural difference is that wearing bathing suits is socially unacceptable.

Finland, a Second Home

In many instances, the ability to adapt in a multicultural environment relies on a bidirectional openness and listening, as well as taking the initiative to lead many group functions not only in projects dealing with EVTEK, but outside activities outside EVTEK, which lead me to new people also from the University of Helsinki. Taking initiative involved communicating in a language that was unfamiliar, and where the misconception of leadership is that stereotyped as loud, boastful, energetic, and at times unbearable. Rather it was listening, patience, empathy, sensitivity, and understanding that brought me closer, to call Finland my second home.

Likewise, the lifestyle is comparatively relaxed than Calgary, so long as you are a student traveler. In general, this relaxed lifestyle has a special result: People are inclined to be friendly, willing to help if you ask, and in many cases, the rules of conduct particularly drinking and eating are equally relaxed.

Academic & Career Pursuits

In many ways, being placed in EVTEK with students who also lived in the same residential area brought great diversity: Spain, Switzerland, France, Italy, Germany, Africa, China, and Taiwan. English as the universally accepted language was the means that brought us together, which professors also used as a means to teach, really was the point that made Finland a second home, bearing in mind being motivated to use the Finnish language at your fingertips can also bring a smile to a stranger.

Honestly, I miss Finland, for it not were the challenges and burdens of my native home, the temptation to stay another four months became a realization with the possibility of working for Nokia and to study and explore my favorite field: Mobile communications and its technological application in modern society. Simply, I would love to continue exploring new technologies and applying them to everyday life as a field of work. More importantly, being in the field of information technology, mobile devices, text messaging, instant messaging, and networking of that sort helped me maintain a relationship with those in Finland.

Friendship Pursuits

However, perhaps I miss Finland, not so much the place, but the strangers I can call a friend. As well, it wasn’t so much of missing the place, but missing the challenges that together with a friend from Calgary that furthered our existing relationship. Through the unknown challenges of Finland, I rediscovered myself, to take upon these new found capabilities and as I speak, to extend and challenge the existing relationship in Canada.

Personal Pursuits

Indeed, through this experience, a new feeling emerged, one that is difficult to describe: A sense of gratitude and appreciation, universal maturity emerging from overcoming the challenges of traveling to the unknown, and a deep desire to continue traveling to the unknown to further mature into a seasoned explorer; Simply, I want to travel again.

One can only imagine what it was like when Christopher Columbus set sail to the unknown, to discover the new land, only having a desire to keep going.

¨ Where the Finish Becomes a Beginning

Finally, if the sections above were not enough to assist, describe and convince you the great personal and academic benefits from having to travel to the unknown, perhaps our website, http://www.finspiration.com will inspire you. I discussed it with my friend Ronald and helped convinced him to write a letter on intent. The fear within me stopped me from doing the same. With a little guidance from Gerry Cross and Ronald pushing me at the last possible moment I got my letter of intent in. It was one of the best choices of my life.

Along with Ronald we went to Finland and Studied at Evtek. The Bigger learning experience for me was the dealing with the different culture of Finland and meeting students from all over Europe. Believe it or not the parties I went too, with all the different cultures, was a learning experience within itself.

The first part of Exchange Experience Document was done as collaboration between Ronald and me although I will admit he did most of the typing. The collaboration only makes since to us because we arranged Passports Visa and Plane Tickets together. This supplement was done on my own to hightligt my expericnes and what I recieved from the exchange.

Staying in Finland

As I arrive back in Calgary this is my reflection on how this experience affected my life and my future plains

Meeting people from other cultures

I have learned a lot about the Finish culture including food, drinks and some customs. Also, besides the Finish culture I meant people from all over the world my flat mates were from Span and Switzerland; other people in the building I stayed were from France, Italy and Germany. I also meant exchange students from Africa and China and Taiwan. English was the common language shared by us all making communication easy.

The exchange has changed the way I view people from Europe and enlighten me on some of the cultural difference. It also helped me understand how people from other cultures view Canada and the way people view Canada in relationship to the US (or the North American Culture). Now that I am back in Canada I miss the friendships that had been built-up while I was on the exchange. I would also recommend that when going on an exchange think about staying for 8 months instead of the 4 months we stayed.

Different teaching styles

The assignments were due at certain dates but in reality everything only need to be completed by the end of term. This meant the student has to be self motivated to do work throughout the term so he doesn’t get to far behind and not able to complete the work at last moment. In many ways the courses seem easer then at Mount Royal they seem to spoon feed the information to the students but when it came down to the end of the courses if the same time wasn’t spent on the courses it reflects in the final marks that you receive.

I became more outgoing

It helped me in dealing with other people I became more outgoing at least a little more

Contacts

I made new friends and contacts that could be useful in the future.

Self Assessment

I discovered abilities about myself that never knew I had and also some weaknesses that I should try to improve on.

Career Plans

As a Careers goes I believe that networking is what I am interested in more then programming. I also believe that a job with world travel would be appealing.

The Biggest Challenge

The biggest challenge was not to do every event that was going on and spend time studying. There was a trip to Lapland for about 10 days a week trip to Russia and a cottage weekend all in the last three weeks of study. There were students that did all three we don’t know when they had time to study. Just trying to keep up with the courses and a couple parties a week was more then I could handle. This will give me a reason to visit Europe so we could experience all the events we didn’t have time for. An event was happing almost every day for the four months I was there. I spent more time partying in Finland then the two years we studied at Mount Royal.

For more information on my experiences in Finland
www.finspiration.com

Contact Information

For more information about my exchange trip to Finland contact me at

E - Mail gregkeith3@yahoo.ca
